If you've calculated your chart on Inner Light using both the Vedic and Western tabs, you may have noticed something unexpected: your Sun sign isn't the same in both. Someone born on October 14th, for example, might be Libra in the Western system and Virgo in the Vedic one. This isn't an error in either calculation — it comes from the fact that Western and Vedic astrology measure the zodiac in two fundamentally different ways.
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons. Every year, 0° Aries is defined as the exact moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator at the spring equinox, regardless of which constellation happens to sit behind it. This system tracks the relationship between the Sun and the Earth's seasons, not the actual backdrop of stars.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored to the fixed stars themselves. Because of a slow wobble in Earth's rotational axis called precession, the point of the spring equinox has been gradually drifting backward against the constellations for thousands of years — by roughly 1 degree every 72 years. The difference between the two zodiacs at any given moment is called the ayanamsha. Inner Light uses the Lahiri ayanamsha, the standard used in most modern Vedic astrology, which currently places the difference at just over 24 degrees.
That 24-degree gap is large enough to shift most people's Sun sign back by one full sign when moving from the tropical to the sidereal calculation — which is why a Western Libra frequently turns out to be a Vedic Virgo, and so on around the zodiac.
Neither system is more "correct" than the other. They're two different, long-established traditions measuring two different things: the tropical zodiac tracks the Sun's relationship to Earth's seasons, while the sidereal zodiac tracks its position against the actual stars.
