What is a rising sign?
The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at birth. It begins the house circle in a natal chart.
The eastern horizon at birth
The rising sign is the tropical (or, in a Vedic chart, sidereal) sign crossing the eastern horizon at the birth time and place. In a Western natal chart it is the cusp of the first house and the starting point of the house system you selected.
It changes faster than the Sun or Moon’s sign. A reliable clock time is what makes it calculable.
Sun, Moon, and rising
Popular astrology often stops at the Sun sign. A working natal chart uses three anchors: the Sun (a seasonal or, sidereally, a stellar identity), the Moon (the faster, more intimate rhythm), and the Ascendant (the way the chart meets the world). Reading them together is more useful than treating any one as the whole person.
Common questions
- Is the rising sign the same as Lagna?
- They name the same astronomical fact — the sign rising in the east — in two languages. Lagna is the Vedic term; rising sign or Ascendant is the Western term. The sign itself may differ between sidereal and tropical zodiacs.
